Jared Leto makes a striking presence on a pop long, flowing locks cascading to his shoulders, a messianic expression gracing his face, and his arms stretched wide, he looks like the lead player in a touring company of "Jesus Christ Superstar."The music this Oscar-winning actor-turned-rocker makes with his band 30 Seconds to Mars mirrors that same mix of hopeful transcendence and pure cheese. As delivered at the PNC Bank Arts Center on Monday ā during a co-headlining show with Linkin Park for the "Carnivore" tour ā Leto's songs achieved a ham-fisted grandeur, suggesting U2 with heavy brain of 30 Seconds' songs have portentous beats, glowing synth lines, and chant-like melodies. The opening line of a key new song, "Birth," goes, "I will save you from yourself," which Leto delivers with maximum as it may be in both construction and delivery, such songs have made Leto the most commercially successful movie-star-turned-rocker in history. It's not a field littered with happy transitions. More common are cautionary tales like Keanu Reeves in Dogstar or Russell Crowe in 30 Foot of contrast, Leto has carved a solid second career for himself, running parallel to the one that earned him a Best Supporting Oscar award this year for his role as an AIDS-afflicted drag queen in "The Dallas Buyer's Club."Since forming in 1998, Leto's band has earned a platinum album with "A Beautiful Lie" in 2005, and solid chart positions around the world for their most recent work, 2013's "Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams."The songs in the band's set Monday blurred together as generic 'rock.' (Gilbert Carrasquillo/Getty Images)As evidenced by the PNC show, the three-man band's songs draw from a host of sources, including goth, emo, art-rock and synth-pop. Yet somehow they managed to water all those styles down to a consistent faceless mush. The songs in the band's set Monday blurred together as generic "rock."Leto spent much of the 80-minute show pumping the audience for attention. He seemed more interested in interacting with them than in engaging the music. Given its quality, it was hard to blame songs, like "City Of Angels" and "Do or Die," peppered the set. They're part of what the band considers a "concept album," based on the broad emotions laid out in the "Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams" title. Yet, the songs seemed like they could be about they served mainly as blank vehicles for Leto to exploit his considerable beauty and charisma. Such are the tools of an actor ā one who's using them now to crudely impersonate a rock @
